Description
Oil spill training course name: The control, containment and clean up of oil spills on land and coastal waters (Level 1)
Purpose: This oil spill training course will provide an understanding of the concerns that management and other relevant authorities have towards environmental damage caused by oil spills.
The different types of absorbents that are available on the market and their individual characteristics are noted and discussed.
The course includes an understanding of the fundamental properties of hydrocarbons and the basic techniques and equipment used to control, contain and clean up spills.
A number of "hands-on" demonstrations are used to illustrate important aspects of various types of products. Discussion is held to evaluate those aspects including disposal options.
The important issues of bio-remediation, oil/water separation, disposal and incident reporting are also covered in the course.
A short test allows the presenter to review points and ensure those attending have grasped the important issues.
Benefits
- An awareness of the environmental philosophy of the company
- Confidence on how to use emergency response equipment
- Knowledge of the type of equipment available to allow participants to review and improve their own hydrocarbon handling techniques.
- Review the company's emergency plans, incident reporting and disposal preferences.
Each participant is provided with course notes and a pen. On completion of the course each person receives a peak cap and a Certificate is forwarded from Perth Petroleum Services.
Location: Training can be held at your site anywhere in Australia or at Perth Petroleum Services' dedicated training room in Welshpool, Western Australia. Training can be conducted at overseas locations on request.
If we are training at your site, a training room or similar venue, complete with a whiteboard is essential. We also require a sealed, covered area of at least three metres by four metres to carry out the practical demonstrations. This can be internal or external however it should be situated close to the training room and protected from the sun and rain.
Session duration: Each session comprises three hours of theory and practical demonstrations.
Training aids: The course is delivered via a PowerPoint presentation. Both laptop and projector are supplied, whilst a whiteboard is essential. All other training equipment and aids are transported by PPS training personnel or are forwarded to the site one week before training takes place.
Consumables: All equipment and samples will be supplied, except for oil used in the practical demonstrations (dependent on the location).
Comments from others who have completed our oil spill training course:
"I just happened to be around when the water cart blew a hydraulic hose and we had a minor spill. I rocked up about 30 seconds after it had happened to find three guys just staring at it. I asked if any of them had spill response training and only one did. Between the two of us we were able to clean it up quite easily. I was so glad to have done the oil spill training as I felt fully equiped to deal with the situation and had confidence that the one guy who had been trained was also competent to deal with it. Thanks!" (Senior Environmentalist, May 2011)
"Was great to have someone who knew what they were talking about from a hands-on perspective rather than someone who learnt from a book telling us what the book said" (Toll Express, Dec 2010)
"Thought this was going to be boring as bat sh*t but was great and very informative" (BHP site, Oct 2010)
