Nearly every industrial facility working with machinery must at some time deal with leaks and spills of liquids.  In order to minimise the impact these spills have on machinery, your facility and the environment, you must have an action plan that will prevent the spills polluting soils, groundwater, stormwater drains and waterways. Part of that action plan should include a clearly labelled spill kit, located in an easily accessible location. The Spill kit should contain items such as absorbent pads, booms, pillows, gloves and disposal bags.

Not all spills and leaks warrant the use of your spill kit.

Spill kits should only be used for spill response. A small spill of a few litres, maybe more of a maintenance issue. Yet these smaller spills accumulatively can still impact the environment by polluting soils, groundwater and stormwater drains. Therefore part of your action plan to manage spills should be selection of appropriate maintenance absorbents.

Spills of oil & fuel and similar products (such as vegetable oils) can find their way into runoff ponds, collection dams or sumps. The spill may have been directed via a storm water drain or flushed through an oil/water separator by accidentally. The result either way, is contamination of the water body.

It is important to deal with a spill as soon as possible.

The type of cleanup described in these notes is for a minor spill (few litres) to a medium spill (1500 Litres) of oil or fuel. In a major spill onto soil, a different technique maybe recommended.

Most safety cabinets should have two venting ports built into the side of them.

One high and the other lower on the opposite side. In some cases these bungs can be opened to reduce vapour build up inside the cabinet.

Why should I vent my cabinet? If you open your cabinet and can smell strong
vapours or if the cabinet has highly flammable liquids stored within it, you should
vent your cabinet. There are two ways this can be done.
